These two create music with unrivalled breadth… Here, Chick Corea and Makoto Ozone duet during a Japanese tour in 2016. The American brought the art of conversing through the medium of piano to the fore with the help of his compatriot Herbie Hancock in 1978, but the conversation he has with his Japanese friend Ozone is quite different to any he’s had before. The album opens with an intro before the first improvisation, and Corea and Ozone are heard saying: “You wanna begin from nothing?” (Corea), “Yeah, let’s start from nothing!” (Ozone). The torrent of notes (and silence) that follows is a fun interpretation of different genres and time periods. Be it jazz or classical (Bartók is on the menu), the improvisation is free and unrestricted, and the constructions are ever-changing. It’s an incredible performance! With their covers of classics, such as the Gershwin brothers’ Someone to Watch Over Me, these pianists reach incredible heights (and without ever needing to resort to pyrotechnic displays or stage effects).
