Eight albums in, Lake Street Dive pulls off an almost impossible feat: They deliver surprises on their latest, Obviously. Credit that, in part to reality—the lyrics this time around feel more personal than ever—and the choice of producer Mike Elizondo, who's best known for his work with grittier artists like Fiona Apple and 21 Pilots. The cutesy kitsch factor of the band's early work has been scrubbed away, and they're better for it. Some of the messages are heavier, and the music is not just the usual brand of clever; it's smart. Bassist Bridget Kearney wrote "Being a Woman," which starts out sparsely with just drums, bass and marimba as Rachael Price sings, "Being a woman is an uphill climb/ Eighty cents on the dollar, and you need every dime." Kearney told NPR: "The groove that we're playing is somewhat of a nod to a bouncier pop song feel, but played in a tired way, which is a musical expression of [a woman] putting on a smile and getting through the day, but feeling this weight on your shoulders of the exhaustion." Catchy "Making Do" is an apology to future generations about everything we haven't done to stop climate change: "To the next generation, Merry Christmas/ You're working harder than ever now and the coffee sucks/ You know Colombia and Kenya got too damn hot/ And now you're making do with what you've got," Price sings against a call-and-response chorus while electric guitar and horns blast as bright as the sun. "Same Old News"—a duet between Price and keyboardist Akie Bermiss—is as warm as brandy and as gold-tinged as '70s AM radio. Opener "Hypotheticals" is a rich slice of jazz-infused R&B and the sly "Hush Money" struts in its dirty funk. "Nobody's Stopping You Now" could be an old Carole King ballad, and "Anymore"—with an incredibly lush vocal melody—makes a valid case for easy listening as a genre to preserve. There are moments of the band's old sass: "You're Ferris Bueller and I'm your day off," Price sings on "I Know That You Know," with its jazz horns and familiar Manhattan Transfer vibes. And "Lackluster" could be a cartoon soundtrack, the bass prowling one exaggerated step at a time and piano acting like ellipses and exclamation points. The whole thing closes out with the pragmatic kiss-off "Sarah"—an a capella number that easily shrugs off the usual modern cheesiness of that style, instead conjuring up lost-in-space spookiness. © Shelly Ridenour/Qobuz
