For fifteen years now Deer Tick have been enjoying pretending to be The Replacements of the third millennium. Fifteen years of revisiting the heritage of binary rock'n' roll, from The Rollings Stones to Nirvana. In 2017, John McCauley's band released two albums simultaneously: Deer Tick Vol. 1 and Deer Tick Vol. 2. Two years later, Mayonnaise acts as a third volume by bringing together alternative versions of songs from the two preceding albums. And to enhance the sauce’s flavour, Deer Tick adds a few new tracks and covers of songs that inspired them for this wonderful work, including compositions by The Pogues (White City), George Harrison (Run of the Mill), The Velvet Underground (Pale Blue Eyes) and Ben Vaughan (Too Sensitive for This World). All this disparate material offers a good insight into Deer Tick's DNA. Good classical rock that’s just as introspective and personal as it is politically engaged and accusatory. It’s no revolution, but there is a strong feeling of wholesomeness, stemming from the crackly vintage amps and the patched-up squealing guitars.
