Since releasing her debut album in 2007, Asa has been crafting a perfect mix of soul, pop, reggae and folk, standing out from the crowd with her powerful songs and captivating voice. At 37 years old, the Franco-Nigerian breaks a five year hiatus and proves that she’s got a lot more left in the tank. Lucid reveals a great maturity, more so than her previous albums. There’s a moving piano accompaniment on Femi Mo, a warm brass section on Until We Try (This Lo’) and a bluesy guitar on Don’t Let Me Go, showcasing just some of the ways in which this record is even more majestic than its predecessors. In the ballads (which dominate the album) Asa exudes a confidence and a tone which demands respect. Even her writing has strengthened and when her lyrics carry the flame for feminism, she avoids all clichés. A wonderful record. © Clotilde Maréchal/Qobuz
