Lily Kershaw

With a sound that's often both lush and delicate, Lily Kershaw's blend of indie folk and songwriter pop reveals a knack for melodic narratives that aren't afraid to explore the deeper recesses of behavior and emotion. After landing a couple of high-profile television placements, she released her debut album, the mostly acoustic Midnight in the Garden, in 2013. Her Nettwerk label debut, 2019's Arcadia, exhibited sleeker pop production while remaining distinctly intimate. She went on to combine gentle acoustic performances with hazy electronics on singles like 2020's "The Last Time" and 2023's depression-inspired "Depreshmode." Born and raised in Los Angeles, Kershaw first worked as an actress, taking small television roles at a young age. Concurrent to her acting career, she was also playing guitar and honing her craft as a songwriter. She had guested on series including Third Watch and Law & Order: Los Angeles by the time she had her music breakthrough in 2012, when one of her songs, "As It Seems," was featured in the Season Seven finale of the CBS series Criminal Minds. A second song, "Ashes Like Snow," was featured prominently in the next year's season finale of the same show, which led to Kershaw signing a recording contract with Nettwerk Records. Marrying thoughtful lyrics, bright melodies, and gentle acoustic instrumentation, her debut album, Midnight in the Garden, appeared on the label in September of 2013. She followed it up with a string of singles, including 2015's "Sleep Peacefully," the tender 2016 carol "Your Christmas Song," and 2017's plaintive "!0,000 Miles." Representing a shift toward a lusher, pop-learning sound, the Los Angeles EP appeared in June 2018 and was followed in early 2019 by a covers EP, The Music's for the Sad Man. It included quiet versions of songs spanning the standard "Dream a Little Dream of Me," Skeeter Davis' "The End of the World," and Alphaville's "Forever Young." Continuing in the vein of a more contemporary, atmospheric singer/songwriter pop, her sophomore album, Arcadia, arrived on Nettwerk in late 2019. Its popularity received a boost from the single "Now & Then," which collected millions of streams across platforms. As the COVID-19 pandemic took hold, Kershaw released a series of singles, among them the solo "The Last Time" and collaborations with Lawson Hull ("Paint"), Jack in Water ("A Stranger's Home"), and producer Slumberville ("Didn't Want to Go"). She returned to solo material with 2023's "Depreshmode," accompanied by fingerpicked guitar, synth shimmer, and layered harmony vocals.
