Today, the American singer, Gretchen Parlato, and the Beninese guitarist and singer, Lionel Loueké, have come together to produce this debut album, which magnificently embodies and illustrates the friendly musical complicity which they’ve shared for some 20 years. With twelve (mostly original) songs (except for the incredibly beautiful cover of Astronauta by the Brazilian Nana Vasconcellos), these soulmates co-create a minimalist, ultra-refined, and hyper-sensual musical anthology. It weaves together a subtle network of references and subliminal influences borrowed from West African musical traditions, jazz, and pop. Inspired arrangements, highlighting the exquisite grooves of a crystalline acoustic guitar (often taking on kora accents, enhanced with the light and polyrhythmic pulsations of articulate tongue and finger clicking), and the disturbing voice of Gretchen Parlato, both powerfully embodied and ethereal, and often overtaken by that of Loueké, give life to repetitive singing melodies full of grace and lightness. Joined on a few tracks by the drummer Mark Guilina, and the bassist Burniss Travis, the duo occasionally (and happily!) let their music assume more modern rhythms and sounds to better include us in their timeless bubble of intimacy, distancing us from the commotion and worries of our everyday lives. © Stéphane Ollivier/Qobuz
