Warm, sentimental, and infectiously tuneful, Engelbert Humperdinck's Hänsel und Gretel is one of the most popular of late Romantic German operas, and it has been a perennial favorite since Richard Strauss conducted its premiere in 1893. Based on the fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, this opera in three acts is regularly presented at Christmastime, and an excerpt from Act 2, the Evening Prayer, has become a children's classic. Marek Janowski leads the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra in this 2017 release on Pentatone, and the lively performance meets the high standards of the audiophile recording, especially in the richness and depth of the playing and the clarity of the singing. The cast is led by mezzo-soprano Katrin Wundsam as Hänsel and soprano Alexandra Steiner as Gretel, and their acting is appropriately innocent and joyful, while soprano Ricarda Merbeth as the Mother and bass-baritone Albert Dohmen as the Father convey their worries and fears of the dark woods. The plum role of the Witch is sung with gleeful menace by tenor Christian Elsner, though the part is treated with campy humor and is unlikely to frighten anyone. Pentatone's multichannel sound gives a good sense of the singers' placement and the orchestral sections, and the details of the score are clear and fully audible. Highly recommended.

Gounod: the Romantic, the Mystic

A major artisan of the renaissance in French music in the second half of the 19th century, alongside his elder colleague Berlioz, whom he admired, and his followers Bizet, Saint-Saëns, and Massenet, who were inspired by his faith in Art, Charles Gounod (1818-1893), a mystic and a charmer, a romantic in search of a new classicism, owed his fame to a few masterpieces, which have overshadowed his daring. A flourishing discography allows us to discover the diversity of his music: instrumental, vocal, religious, and lyrical.

Fritz Busch at Glyndebourne

We cannot talk about the history of the Glyndebourne operas without mentioning Fritz Busch. The German-born conductor dedicated his life to music from an early age before fleeing to the green pastures of England when Hitler came into power. Almost by coincidence, Busch was there to conduct the orchestra as the curtains rose for the first ever Glyndebourne Festival in 1934. Today, he is considered one of the most outstanding conductors of the 20th century.

Women Composers: A Secret History

From Sappho of Mytilene to Kaija Saariaho, music history has been marked by female figures who “dared” to write music. Is creation a male privilege? Our sound museum does hold more well-known and recognised male than female composers. Yet their works are no less exciting and there is absolutely no reason for them to play second fiddle, or be ignored altogether. Below, you’ll find a defence and illustration of female composition works through eleven musical portraits.
