The Dead Weather – samengesteld uit de talenten van Jack White, Jack Lawrence, Alison Mosshart en Dean Fertita – zijn niet zozeer bezig met het waarmaken van de verwachtingen over hun project maar druk om deze te ondermijnen. Ze wijken voor de strakkere structuren van hun andere bands in ruil voor een bluesy, jamachtige grind. Horehounds openingsnummer, “60 Feet Tall”, laat zien hoe explosief dat geluid kan zijn, van de plagende gitaren en percussie aan het begin, tot de uitgerekte climax. White en Mosshart halen het beste bij elkaar boven op “Hang You From the Heavens” en “Treat Me Like Your Mother” waarop hun vocalen en tekst “left, right, left, right” over dansen of over vechten zou kunnen gaan. Horehound is een innemend album, somes op onverwachte manieren.
