Billie Joe Armstrong’s band is back with Father Of All Motherf***ers, a manifesto of pure rage if ever there was one. Ten tracks make up twenty-five minutes of Green Day intensity that they have not displayed for a long time. When words, actions and even protests no longer have any effect, the only response possible is to let the decibels speak instead of the fists. Catchy and unpredictable, the only thing left to do is to headbang and admit defeat during the stronger moments like during the eponymous track, or the airy Oh Yeah with its unwavering rhythm. Green Day is not only able to sing loud and fast, as proven by the poignant Junkies On A High which employs a well-used catchy melody. The closing song Graffitia is a fierce old-school frenzy which is capable of getting anyone nearby up to dance. Father Of All… (its more marketable alternative name) is the album which has the fire that was perhaps missing from a few of their latest records. It’s a real pleasure to hear the Californians regain all that rage that we were suspecting was beginning to diminish. © Maxime Archambaud/Qobuz

In your panoramas...
Daniel Johnston, A Troubling, Troubled Icon

No one ever sounded like Daniel Johnston. The little known depressive artist found fame thanks to his peers’ recognition. He passed away on September 11th, 2019, at the age of 58; his discography has slowly become the symbol of naïve, lo-fi and hyper-emotional music. It’s never too late to (re)discover this bona fide underground genius, and his heartfelt, authentic music.

Tuareg Blues: The Rock Oasis

Since the Tuareg group Tinariwen released their first official album in 2002, entitled “The Radio Tisdas Sessions”, their guitar-soaked electric music has become a category of rock - one that is recognised and respected from Bamako to Los Angeles. This international success has allowed many musicians from the Sahara to get their music heard. And Western rockers have often been attracted to this poetic music emanating from the sand dunes and rocky expanses.

David Byrne, a burgeoning mind

He was the leader of the Talking Heads, he recorded punk funk and South-American music, republished gems of world music, spent countless hours cycling through large cities throughout the world, and dabbled in dozens of other activities. What is truly going on in David Byrne’s head?
