Bar Kokhba encompasses the wealth of material John Zorn has composed with his eminent quartet Masada. The album is a collection of Masada songs that have been rearranged for chamber ensembles. For this effort, Zorn enlists some of New York's finest musicians: John Medeski, Marc Ribot, Anthony Coleman, and Erik Freedlander, among others. The compositions range from groups of four to solo performances by Ribot, Medeski, and Coleman. While some compositions retain their original structure and sound, some are expanded and probed by Zorn's arrangements, and resemble avant-garde classical music more than jazz. But this is the beauty of the album; the ensembles provide a forum for Zorn to expand his compositions. The album consistently impresses, and the highlights include "Gevurah," "Paran," and "Mochin." Zorn's genius as both songwriter and arranger are evidenced, and the recording sits well among the traditional Masada material.

Bill Evans in 10 Albums

If it weren’t for him, Keith Jarrett, Brad Mehldau and thousands of other jazz pianists would play differently today. Forty years since his death, Bill Evan’s legacy lives on and is more influential than ever before. It’s certainly no mean feat selecting ten of his best albums from an endless discography where even the albums considered non-essential are still superior to 90% of other music. But here it is – a selection of 10 of his best albums, in our humble opinion.

Kamasi Washington, the Sax of Angels

After his major success with a triple album, he went on to repeat this with a double one! Kamasi Washington charms and intrigues well beyond the jazz sphere. Working with Kendrick Lamar and Snoop Dogg, and most importantly as the head of the West Coast Get Down collective, the charismatic saxophonist from Los Angeles brings an incredible wave of excitement to the contemporary jazz scene.

The Stan Getz Quartet Live at the Village Gate

The story of jazz is sometimes told as a tour of mountaintops, the peak-achievement albums that changed the thinking of everyone else on the scene.
