Si bien no hay nada que pueda reemplazar ver a los White Stripes en directo, este álbum captura la mayor parte de su fascinante presencia en el escenario. El álbum se abre con cuatro roqueros furiosos que muestran cómo de primitivo es el dúo en directo, en “Black Math” y en un "Blue Orchid” que deja sin aliento suenan como si apenas pueden mantener el ritmo con la energía que fluye a través de ellos, pero muchos de los momentos más brillantes de Under Great White Northern Lights tienen lugar cuando aminoran la marcha. Lo más destacado del álbum posiblemente sea una versión especialmente impresionante de “The Union Forever”, con voces extradesesperadas de Jack rodeado por un órgano intenso de película de miedo. También hay un gran número de los favoritos entre los que se incluyen “Jolene”, “Fell in Love with a Girl” con aires de blues y el traumático “Seven Nation Army".
