The Understanding, la continuación tan esperada del aclamado Melody A.M. de Röyksopp, muestra al dúo noruego de música electrónica refinando su sonido ambiental. En muchos de estos temas Torbjørn Brundtland y Svein Berge se centran en estructuras pop más accesibles. "Only This Moment" es un número desbordante de música dance al estilo de Pet Shop Boys y "49 Percent" se aventura en territorio R&B contemporáneo, mientras "Follow My Ruin" se inspira en los 80, repleto de contrabajo funky y redobles de batería sintetizada.
