En 2002 Dylan dedicaba el volumen 5 de sus Bootleg Series a la famosa Rolling Thunder Revue, su aplaudida gira de otoño de 1975/primavera de 1976, hasta entonces solo documentada por el álbum Hard Rain. Una catarata de 57 conciertos que seguía a la edición de uno de sus mejores discos, Blood on the Tracks, para la cual contó con la colaboración de una ex, Joan Baez, de Roger McGuinn de The Band y de Joni Mitchell, pero también de Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Kinky Friedman, Bob Neuwirth, T-Bone Burnett, el guitarrista de David Bowie Mick Ronson y de la violinista Scarlet Rivera. Una gira excepcional pero atípica dentro de la trayectoria de su autor. Las canciones de Dylan (con 34 años recién cumplidos y en pleno caos sentimental) encontraban un original envoltorio que combinaba tradición folk (con el fantasma de Woody Guthrie revoloteando por ahí), espíritu informal («somos todos muy amigos») y grandes dosis de modernidad, gracias especialmente a la guitarra glam de Ronson. De este modo, Zimmerman transformaría su «tournee» de muchos meses en un circo rockero donde cierto desorden expresivo era elevado a categoría de arte.
Con The Rolling Thunder Revue: The 1975 Live Recordings, los dylanófilos saltarán de júbilo: ¡148 temas (¡100 de ellos nunca licenciados antes!) a lo largo de 14 discos que suman más de 10 horas y media de música! Y es que esta auténtica cueva de Alí Babá, destinada especialmente a sus fans más hardcore, reúne íntegros los cinco conciertos grabados en esa gira, así como los ensayos registrados en los estudios SIR de Nueva York y en el Seacrest Motel de Falmouth. Sin olvidar como bonus un disco que recopila cortes raros extraídos de diversas actuaciones procedentes de esta Rolling Thunder Revue. En todo caso, se requiere tiempo para disfrutar de tan excesivo y apasionante documento sonoro, que repasa una etapa vital y creativa clave en la trayectoria de un Dylan mostrado con toda su complejidad: su relación con la tradición, el anclaje en su época, sus vínculos con la escritura pero también con aquellos que le rodeaban. En 2002 Dylan dedicaba el volumen 5 de sus Bootleg Series a la famosa Rolling Thunder Revue, su aplaudida gira de otoño de 1975/primavera de 1976, hasta entonces solo documentada por el álbum Hard Rain. Una catarata de 57 conciertos que seguía a la edición de uno de sus mejores discos, Blood on the Tracks, para la cual contó con la colaboración de una ex, Joan Baez, de Roger McGuinn de The Band y de Joni Mitchell, pero también de Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Kinky Friedman, Bob Neuwirth, T-Bone Burnett, el guitarrista de David Bowie Mick Ronson y de la violinista Scarlet Rivera. Una gira excepcional pero atípica dentro de la trayectoria de su autor. Las canciones de Dylan (con 34 años recién cumplidos y en pleno caos sentimental) encontraban un original envoltorio que combinaba tradición folk (con el fantasma de Woody Guthrie revoloteando por ahí), espíritu informal («somos todos muy amigos») y grandes dosis de modernidad, gracias especialmente a la guitarra glam de Ronson. De este modo, Zimmerman transformaría su «tournee» de muchos meses en un circo rockero donde cierto desorden expresivo era elevado a categoría de arte.
