Odetta Hartman is one of a kind: Who else draws from burlesque and vaudeville jazz, Alan Lomax field recordings, snarling rock and electronica experimentation? On her third album, the Manhattan-bred classical violinist sounds wild: as in free, unrestrained and, perhaps, even charmingly feral. She brings to mind a former street cat that has learned the politesse of domestication but still retains a quiet hum of danger. "Mother / Child" starts out with deep, dark sounds that seem to emerge from a cave, before Hartman's voice bubbles and ripples to the surface—growling and howling and wailing against the nervy drums and moody doomed bass. It's a wild, inventive interpretation of "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child," the traditional associated with folk singer Odetta (Hartman's namesake), and bears shades of both Fiona Apple and Nina Simone. "Goldilocks," meanwhile, brings to mind the kooky electro-dance pop of Grimes, as Hartman uses a hushed delivery to nod at fairy tales, vaudeville striptease, grunge stomp and the musical Gypsy's signature message: "Let me entertain you." "Wacky"—as in wacky tobacky—plays up Amanda Palmer-style flapper nostalgia, while sultry, hip-swishing "Dr. No" combines dramatic strings, va-va-voom drums and layered vocals that sound in competition with each other. Swansongs is mixed by hot indie producer and engineer Sarah Tudzin, who also worked on the boygenius record, and she makes the listener feel like an active participant. Scattered between songs are immersive moments—snippets of party conversations and more—that suggest walking down a hall and opening the various doors for a few seconds. Gauzy and dreamy, "Ode 222 You" sounds ready to soundtrack a Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amelie, Delicatessen) movie; the background is overstuffed with squeaks and squawks and sonic scribbles, with twee aesthetics up front to charm. Low and moody "Rise Above" is a mysterious dark swirl, haunted by folksy mountain banjo. Burbling "Good Socks (Happy)" references R&B soul and doo-wop pop and weaves in samples of people naming what makes them happy: scented candles, smooth concrete, the sourest of candies, talking to a stranger. Add this flirtatious, teeth-baring album to the list. © Shelly Ridenour/Qobuz
