Standing on the Rooftop es la primera grabación de Madeleine Peyroux para Decca con el productor Craig Street. Con un grupo diverso de músicos (incluyendo al guitarrista Marc Ribot y al bajista Me'Shell Ndegeocello, entre muchos otros), el programa es rico y elegante, con toques de producción moderna, aun cuando las canciones tengan sus raíces en el pasado histórico de la música americana tradicional: canciones pop, blues, jazz y melodías de sala de estar. La lánguida lectura de "Martha My Dear" de Lennon & McCartney tiene un estilo deliberadamente anticuado, mientras que "Love in Vain" de Robert Johnson, con su extraño fondo de órgano y su eco de estudio, utiliza trucos de producción parecidos a los que Tom Waits podría aplicar para disfrazar un blues.
