Heinrich Schütz's choral music began to be recorded as soon as performers started looking into Bach's predecessors in Germany, and most of it has been recorded often. There are big readings by modern choirs and careful historically inclined versions, with advantages to each. Perhaps never, however, has there been a Schütz collection that throws his works into such sharp relief, and it comes not from Germany, with its deep bench of choirs, or from Italy, home of the cutting edge in Baroque performance, but from France. The vocal-instrumental group Les Cris de Paris and director Geoffroy Jourdain have issued some wonderful Baroque recordings, and this is one of the best. The ensemble size, 22 choristers and about the same number of instrumentalists, is perfect. The program differentiates two major phases of Schütz's career, with stylistic advances precipitated by the composer's two trips to Italy, in 1609 and 1628, where he soaked up the groundbreaking innovations of, respectively, Giovanni Gabrieli and Claudio Monteverdi, and returned home to put a distinctively German spin on them. His sacred music has a mixture of formality and deep expressiveness that is very much akin to Bach, and Jourdain and Les Cris de Paris atomize its elements beautifully here. They also capture another Bachian feature of Schütz's styles, which were effective both on the larger and the smaller scale; the Psalmen Davids and Symphoniae Sacrae are interspersed with intimate works for small vocal and instrumental forces that continued to resonate decades later in the sacred chamber music of Buxtehude, and even in Bach's cantatas. The singing is all at a very high level, and its various layers emerge vividly. The result is a set of performances where each work has deep resonances. Some of those resonances, as Jourdain points out in the interview-format booklet notes, were personal for the composer, and this adds yet another layer. The sound from the Église protestante unie du Saint-Esprit in Paris is ideal, and in every way, this is a revelatory Schütz release.
