Long-haired and charismatic baritone Andrè Schuen has made quite a splash, and even with the profusion of recordings of Schubert's song cycle Die schöne Müllerin, D. 795, this version made a quick appearance on classical sales charts. Schuen has the kind of voice that makes the listener want to luxuriate, and concert bookers want to pick up the phone. Schubert's sheer melodicism, which reached a high point with this cycle, suits Schuen perfectly, and he exploits his strengths with deliberate treatments of the slower songs that enable him to draw out fetching turns of musical phrase. These are set off dramatically by the relatively quick tempos in the faster songs. One might regard this as a young singer's Die schöne Müllerin, and indeed, Schuen falters only in the final songs of the cycle, as the mood of suicidal gloom takes hold, but the vocal beauty keeps right on coming. Vocal beauty like this, however, occurs rarely. Schuen gets able accompaniment from pianist Daniel Heide in a cycle where the partnership of pianist to singer took a great leap forward, and he is definitely a singer to watch closely.
