The small (ten-voice) vocal group Roomful of Teeth has the goal of expanding the sounds of ensemble vocal music, but it has never matched the extremes heard here. The basic sound might be described as Manhattan Transfer amplified by the psychedelics that provide the title for one of the four compositions on the album, William Brittelle's Psychedelics. The basic smooth, close harmonies are augmented by a wild variety of vocal techniques, including solo operatic singing, speech, nonsense syllables, hisses, doo-wop slides, and much more. It is a spectacular virtuoso display, but this is not even the album's most interesting feature. What is really unusual is how the music took shape. The four works were all written for Roomful of Teeth, but that doesn't quite cover it; the music was created in collaboration between the group and the composers. One of the latter, Caroline Shaw, is a group member, and another, Brittelle, is the album's producer. The end result is a fascinating test for the composers, who have to meet the rigorous condition of writing music that fits the group while pursuing their own styles. Shaw's work uses texts from Shakespeare's The Tempest, which also furnishes the album title. Psychedelics earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Contemporary Classical Composition, but that is far from the only reason to hear this release.
