For those that don’t know: behind Dope Lemon is Angus Stone. A pseudonym that appeared (whilst under the influence of substances) as early as 2016 on the album Honey Bones. Breaking away from his sister Julia to go solo in 2009, he first released Smoking Gun under the name Lady of the Sunshine, then Broken Brights (2012) under his real name. Rose Pink Cadillac, the third album under this alias Dope Lemon, still has a heavy laid-back Australian feel with smoky slow tempos, like its predecessors, but with a glitzier finish. A rose-pink finish even. During his all-nighters of making music, between whisky and other pleasures, Angus writes about perfect love. Loving someone beautiful, who you have fantasised about but found, a love which is incredible but true, all metaphorically presented by this pink 1960s Cadillac Fleetwood. Enhanced by mellotron and sax, the album is mostly interspersed with groovy vintage and kinetic tracks. Moving with ease from the falsetto soul of Kids Fallin' in Love to the dark, string-based country of Stingray Pete, which evokes imaginary cowboys in a burning bush, and then to the woolly hip-hop of Every Day Is a Holiday featuring fellow Aussie Winston Surfshirt, Angus Stone takes pleasure in navigating his way around and conquering a few more sound territories, which offers some nice surprises.
