A cellist in the orchestra of the San Petronio Basilica in Bologna, Domenico Gabrielli (1659-1690), was no relation to the Gabrieli of Venice, and is the author of a series of Ricercari for solo cello, the first pieces discovered for this instrument which was slowly separating itself out from the viola da gamba. Written in 1689 (Bach was four at the time), these Ricercari are striking for their freedom of invention and their fantasy. Traversing the beautiful Sicilian countryside listening to this spellbinding music, viola player Christophe Desjardins decided to appropriate these pieces and re-transcribe them for his instrument. Fascinated by the timeless modernity of these pages, he suggested that his friend the Italian composer Ivan Fedele write a kind of echo across the centuries that could reach out to these Ricercari, taking in some of Gabrielli's figures and mannerisms. Fedele rose to the occasion with five Ritrovari (roughly "rediscoveries") in an attempt to creatively renew the emotions of an inward journey. © François Hudry/Qobuz
