Puccini's Il tabarro, one of the one-act operas that make up the late set Il Trittico, has not been particularly well-served on recordings. A classic performance by Plácido Domingo and Leontyne Price has held the place for the opera in collections, but the market is open for new versions, and many listeners will be glad to encounter this 2020 release, recorded under conductor Marek Janowski in excellent, idiomatic sound at the Kulturpalast Dresden. The attraction will be even stronger inasmuch as the album offers the chance to hear some new singers; they are of various ages, but most might be described as rising. There is not an Italian in the bunch, but there are Americans, an Indian, a South African, and more (the credits list an Italian language coach, but native speakers must judge her success). They work well as an ensemble, and there are some fine, powerful singers, including the appropriately named Melody Moore as Giorgetta and baritone Lester Lynch as the deceived Michele in this grim verismo shipyard tale. There are a few places where one feels the singers could have let their hair down or dug into the subject matter rather than being note-perfect, but, in a way, this is a conductor's and an orchestra's Il tabarro, and the Dresden Philharmonic under Janowski acquits itself well. Janowski plays up the darkly innovative qualities of the score, reflecting the influence of Stravinsky and the French Impressionists, and there are lots of telling details. This release will find a home on many opera shelves and hard drives.
