“I want to provide refuge for listeners” states Nick Mulvey on his third solo album, which seeks to follow in the footsteps of his previous albums First Mind (2014) and Wake Up Now (2017). The former member and co-founder of the jazz outfit Portico Quartet creates a folky sound inspired by his idols (Nick Drake in particular) with the help of his trusty acoustic guitar. Here, he is likened to Ben Howard and Laura Marling, both of whom he’s supported in the past. "I hope the album supports people and I hope it inspires and stimulates new ideas, insights and ambitions. I hope it also generates a sense of the sacred within its audience." Mulvey wrote the album during the pandemic, recorded it in Paris and then saw it produced by Renaud Letang (Feist, Chilly Gonzales, Emilie Simon). New Mythology smoothly alternates between stripped-down folk (Another Way to Be), pop ballads pop (Brother to You, featuring his ex-quartet member, Milo Fitzpatrick) and Cuban music laden with congas and bongos (The Gift). Mulvey studied music in Havana, after all! To keep us immersed in his world of reinvention, Nick Mulvey slips in children’s conversations, crowds, sirens and even a few cicadas into the interlude Interbeing Part 1.
