Tras la génesis de este álbum se descubre una historia al mismo tiempo triste y hermosa. Triste porque se trata del octavo y, literalmente, último disco del grupo (al menos, con su alineación inicial). Pero también hermosa porque nos permite disfrutar una vez más de la voz de Dolores O’Riordan, fallecida inesperadamente el 15 de enero de 2018. Y es que, gracias a las demos grabadas unas semanas antes de su óbito, ha resultado posible esta resurrección fonográfica: Noel Hogan, guitarrista de los Cranberries, había empezado a trabajar estos temas en mayo de 2017 durante una gira, antes de registrar once demos con la vocalista unos meses después. Y, con el apoyo de la familia O’Riordan, los miembros de la banda se pusieron a trabajar en estos primeros bocetos para convertirlos en verdaderas canciones.
Curiosamente, o no tanto, los títulos y las letras de las piezas hacen a menudo referencia a la pérdida y al horizonte final con considerable alcance emocional, no solo a causa de la propia tragedia, sino porque las melodías y arreglos adoptan muchas veces timbres intrínsecamente melancólicos. Las cuerdas que envuelven el final de Lost, o bien la letanía pianística de Catch Me If You Can, no hacen sino intensificar los inevitables escalofríos que recorren al oyente durante la audición de In the End. Pero como han probado tantas veces a lo largo de tres décadas, los irlandeses apuestan por los acentos esperanzadores y por la mayor energía comunicativa. Y las líricas melodías de Got It (con su predominante bajo) y de Summer Song están ahí para demostrarlo. En cuanto a baladas como Illusion y In the End, se caracterizan por su tono crepuscular, pese a tratarse de un ocaso tan hermoso como delicado.
