Jeremiah Chiu & Marta Sofia Honer's second album departs in ways both discriminating and dynamic from their celebrated 2022 debut, Recordings from the Åland Islands. Different Rooms is a discrete place of otherness and elsewhere, the title referring to Chiu and Honer's Los Angeles studios. Located next to each other, the two unique spaces were an essential aspect of the music's composition, editing and collaging, informing the album's theme of communal living and individual identity as well.
For the Åland Islands project, Chiu used bass guitar, a variety of keyboards and field recordings to capture and convey atmospheres and soundtracks from a remote place in the world. With Different Rooms, Chiu and Honer sought something more immediate: to bring the picture into the listener, rather than the expected vice-versa.
Alongside Honer's viola and electronics, Chiu's streamlined rig, modular synthesizer and live-sampling find fresh spaces that are further embellished via a flowing succession of guest shots from guitarist Jeff Parker, saxophonist Josh Johnson, mezzo-soprano vocalist Giovanna Jacques, field recordings from Taiwan's Zhinan Temple and Ben Babbitt's additional string treatment on "Before and After Signs." The wording of that title suggests Eno, and Chiu and Horner's collaboration has a similar breeze-filled, near-ambient quality, but their aim—to communicate the shared realities of urban space on the lives of unique individuals, and the necessity to somehow live together—infuses their songs and motifs to promote a stimulating and distinctive listening experience all its own. © Rian Murphy/Qobuz
