While there are numerous choices on the market for recordings of the guitar works by Gaspar Cassadó and Federico Mompou, there are several draws to this one by Eugenio Della Chiara, his debut on the Naxos label. Combining these composers on the same solo guitar program seems natural in that they were contemporaries, each was heavily influenced by Catalan folk music and lore, and all but the two Cançó i dansa here by Mompou were written for the legendary Andrés Segovia. Most importantly, though, is the player stepping into the considerable role of Segovia, and there is much to like about Della Chiara's performances. While the natural fit of these composers on a singular program makes sense, it also produces a major challenge to the performer, keeping the audience's focus throughout. That is not an issue here, thanks, in part, to the rhythmic variety of the dances but primarily due to Della Chiara's incredibly precise and clean playing while not sacrificing the phrasing and lyricism of these expressive composers. Perhaps the best combination of these is found in the Muñeira (or muiñeira) finale of Mompou's Suite compostelana: a lively, up-tempo traditional dance that will certainly leave listeners walking away from this program with a smile and maybe a little pep in their step. Credit also goes to Naxos' engineers who provide properly intimate sound from the Forum Della Chiara in Pesaro, Italy, placing the listener directly beside Della Chiara.
