Para el alabado drama de 2005 de Ang Lee sobre un amor prohibido en las montañas del oeste de EE.UU., el director solicitó al músico argentino Gustavo Santaolalla, conocido por sus aportaciones a la atmósfera de Diarios de Motocicleta, que creara la partitura de la película. En este trabajo las composiciones de guitarra libre y resonante de Santaolalla, las cuales recuerdan el trabajo en solitario de Daniel Lanois, proporciona un telón de fondo perfecto para la taciturna película, especialmente en el suave "Brokeback Mountain 1" y la inteligente "Snow". La banda sonora también cuenta con la participación de Willie Nelson interpretando una versión bellamente minimalista del tema "He Was a Friend of Mine" de Bob Dylan y Emmylou Harris prestando su voz inconfundible en "A Love That Will Never Grow Old". Este trabajo, una dinámica pieza de acompañamiento a la venerada película, debería resultar atractivo para los fans tanto de la película como de los artistas mencionados anteriormente.
