The warm, amber voice of mezzo-soprano Anna Lucia Richter resonates incredibly well with Johannes Brahms’ lieder, a lesser-known part of his oeuvre. For her third recording with the Dutch label Pentatone, the young German singer has chosen around twenty pieces ranging from love poetry and folk songs to the darker side of German Romanticism.
Beautifully supported by Ammiel Bushakevitz’s eloquent piano, she takes the listener on a journey through the countryside, showing them Brahms’ playful and profound depictions of tormented love. Punctuated by well-known titles such as 'Vergebliches Ständchen', 'Wiegenlied' and the famous 'Mainacht', this album does real justice to Brahms’ immense body of work, which includes over 380 lieder for one, two or four voices. These vocal parts are always fluid and expressive.
The perfect form of these compositions is admirable, with an ideal distribution between voice and piano. Upon closer inspection, it’s hard not to be struck by their reliably symmetrical, beautiful and consistent structure.
