The output of the Freiburger Barockorchester over time has moved forward from core Baroque repertory to Mendelssohn and Schubert. The group leapfrogged over Beethoven, however, perhaps holding him in reserve for the Harmonia Mundi label's large Beethoven series of the 2020s. These have now begun to appear with a variety of conductors at the helm. This release includes the Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Op. 92, and the ballet The Creatures of Prometheus, Op. 43, and the conductor is the orchestra's concertmaster, Gottfried von der Goltz. Both readings are enjoyable and valuable. Compared with the blistering first movement of the Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125, led by Pablo Heras-Casado, and the rethinking from the ground up of the Missa Solemnis, Op. 123, by René Jacobs, von der Goltz does not color far outside of the lines, with moderate tempos. It's not that this is a traditional reading of the Seventh; no historical-instrument performance can be that, but von der Goltz lets the orchestra do the talking, with the sharp attacks and slightly buzzy textures of the winds cutting through the texture and providing considerable momentum in the finale, creating a kind of pedal point at several junctures. The period brass instruments emerge in full glory here, but the strings are never overwhelmed, and Harmonia Mundi's Teldex Studio sound renders the conductor's careful balances faithfully. Also worthwhile is The Creatures of Prometheus, which is rarely performed complete. This reading captures the pregnant quality of much of the score, which contains ideas Beethoven worked out in pieces to come, most prominently in the finale and its tune that reappeared in the Symphony No. 3 in E flat major, Op. 55 ("Eroica"). Historically oriented performances of Beethoven are still not so common, but they are making headway, and this is a good place to start with them.
