A los apasionados por el boato de la realeza británica les encantará este doble álbum que contiene la «Música de coronación» de los cuatro monarcas del siglo XX: Eduardo VII en 1902, Jorge V en 1911, Jorge VI en 1937 y Elizabeth II, actual regente, en 1953. Y lo mínimo que puede decirse es que pocas ceremonias alcanzan en la actualidad semejante grado de pompa.
Punto de encuentro entre tradición y modernidad, estas celebraciones se caracterizan por la evocación de obras pertenecientes al patrimonio musical histórico, en combinación con piezas encargadas para la ocasión a los mejores compositores del reino. Ceremonias que requieren el cierre de la abadía de Westminster durante varios meses para que un ejército de trabajadores construya monumentales secciones capaces de acoger a cerca de 8.000 invitados. Y, también, numerosos ensayos con unos coros compuestos por 400 efectivos vocales, la mitad de ellos voces blancas, una descomunal orquesta y un omnipresente y poderoso órgano.
Esta grabación reúne una selección de los mejores momentos sonoros de tales coronaciones, estructurados a manera de único programa litúrgico. Una ambiciosa reconstrucción dirigida por Paul McCreesh, que en gran medida toma como modelo la celebración de 1937, cambiando, eso sí, el estilo interpretativo propio de esa época en lo referente a la obra de Händel; y es que la ejecución de su música ha experimentado enormes transformaciones, ofreciéndose aquí en el estilo «barroco» característico de estas primeras décadas del siglo XXI. Ha sido necesario, por otra parte, tomar alguna decisión dolorosa, sobre todo a la hora de elegir el Te Deum, pieza fundamental y punto culminante de la ceremonia.
