Les combats de Nina Simone

Elle a beau être considérée aujourd’hui comme une des voix les plus originales du jazz et de la soul, la vie de Nina Simone n’a jamais été un long fleuve tranquille vers les sommets. Car celle qui rêvait d’être la première pianiste classique noire américaine n’a cessé de se battre contre les autres, contre les siens et contre elle-même.

Cet énième combat se retourne vite contre elle. Les concerts s’annulent à la chaîne, son mari lui interdit d’apprendre à se servir d’une arme à feu, sa famille demande de plus en plus de soutien financier, le fisc lui réclame des sommes délirantes… Nina Simone ne s’est jamais sentie aussi seule. Pire, son caractère est de plus en plus incontrôlable et ses propos parfois incohérents. En septembre 1970, elle jette l’éponge, quitte Andrew mais aussi son pays, direction La Barbade. Quatre ans plus tard, elle s’envole pour l’Afrique, au Liberia, accompagnée par sa fille Lisa. Une période qu’elle décrit dans le film What Happened, Miss Simone ? comme la plus heureuse de sa vie. Là-bas pourtant, son comportement déraille et Nina, l’ex-femme battue, bat à son tour sa propre fille. Une situation intenable qui pousse l’adolescente de 14 ans à retourner vivre chez son père aux États-Unis. Ses délires se multiplient – elle déclare détester jouer du piano depuis qu’elle a 4 ans – et ses ressources se tarissent. Elle a beau enregistrer quelques albums qui rencontrent un succès mitigé tant critique que public (It Is Finished pour RCA en 1974 et Baltimore pour CTI en 1978), son besoin d’argent la pousse à s’envoler pour l’Europe où elle espère que ses fans ne demandent qu’à la voir sur scène.

Direction la Suisse puis la France, où elle s’installe en 1981. Totalement ingérable, elle vit dans un appartement parisien qu’elle entretient mal et se refait une santé dans des petites salles comme les Trois Mailletz. Mal entourée, son come-back fait peu de bruit et les clubs peinent à se remplir. Mais Nina passe tout de même ces dernières années de sa vie à monter sur quelques scènes européennes (Londres, Montreux) et à signer quelques derniers albums (en 1982 Fodder on My Wings pour Carrère, en 1987 Let It Be Me pour Verve et en 1993 A Single Woman pour Elektra). Les démons la rongent mais la médecine l’aide à ne pas sombrer. Sa schizophrénie et sa bipolarité sont soignées au Trilafon, un antipsychotique très puissant. Sur scène, sa voix de grande prêtresse soul n’est plus tout à fait la même. Sa vie personnelle est un désastre, sa solitude est plus que jamais totale mais grâce à Chanel, le public se souvient à nouveau d’elle. En 1993, elle s’installe à Bouc-Bel-Air près d'Aix, alternant concerts aux quatre coins du monde (São Paulo, Seattle, Marciac…) et crises de démence (elle met le feu à sa maison, tire sur un voisin…). Le 21 avril 2003 enfin, elle perd une bataille de plus, contre un cancer du sein. Deux jours plus tôt, pourtant, Nina Simone en avait remporté une. Et de taille : le Curtis Institute de Philadelphie, qui l’avait recalée dans sa jeunesse, lui attribuait enfin un diplôme honoraire.
