Le grand violoncelliste américain d’origine chinoise fait partie de ces artistes qui ont décloisonné le monde de la musique classique trop souvent recroquevillé sur lui-même. Yo-Yo Ma a en effet ouvert largement ouvert les fenêtres sur de vastes horizons en abordant d’autres formes musicales comme le jazz avec Stéphane Grappelli, le tango, la musique de film. Il a aussi monté des projets assez fous, comme celui autour de la Route de la soie (Silk Road) avec des musiciens asiatiques et moyen-orientaux pour des échanges culturels, des commandes d’œuvres et de concerts ou sa collaboration avec des membres du peuple de la brousse en Afrique. Sur un plan plus politique, Yo-Yo Ma a joué en duo avec Condoleeza Rice, secrétaire d’état des États-Unis et par ailleurs excellente pianiste et a créé une pièce spécialement écrite par son ami le compositeur John Williams pour l’investiture du président Barack Obama. Né à Paris, Yo-Yo Ma commence à étudier la musique avec son père, puis au conservatoire de Saint-Germain-en-Laye avec une élève du grand Paul Bazelaire, un des meilleurs représentants de l’École du violoncelle français. Yo-Yo Ma poursuit ensuite ses études avec János Scholz et Leonard Rose à la Juilliard School de New York où ses parents s’établissent. Devenu citoyen américain, il a 18 ans lorsque Leonard Bernstein le présente dans des émissions pour la télévision qui lancent immédiatement sa carrière. Le succès ne le quittera plus. Pendant deux saisons, Yo-Yo Ma participe, au Carnegie Hall de New York et au Kennedy Center de Washington à une fameuse série de concerts sou l’égide de « Isaac Stern et ses amis ». Il remporte des prix dans le monde entier, multipliant concerts et enregistrements pour CBS-SONY CLASSICAL. Si Yo-Yo Ma a accumulé les expériences musicales et philosophiques, c’est dans les Six Suites pour violoncelle solo de Bach qu’il trouve la racine de sa propre réflexion. « Bach sait qu’il est impossible d’atteindre l’infini » dit-il, « mais il nous en montre le chemin. » Lorsqu’on lui reproche son multiculturalisme, Yo-Yo Ma fait encore référence à Bach dont les influences musicales étaient elles-aussi multiples, entre la sarabande d’origine africaine, la gigue celtique ou le menuet français. « Les six mouvements d’une suite sont comme six frères et sœurs qui ont chacun leur caractère mais forment une famille » ajoute-t-il. Conscient que chaque époque, que chaque musique contient sa part de rêve, Yo-Yo Ma poursuit inlassablement sa quête de musique dans le monde entier, passant sans complexe du Concerto de Dvorak avec le Boston Symphony à des musiques qu’il joue avec une peuplade du Kalahari. Faire revenir la culture au centre de la vie est le combat permanent de ce « Messager de la paix » distingué par l’ONU en 2006. Yo-Yo Ma s’engage à être utile et à porter le message de la musique dans des lieux aussi improbables que des prisons, des hôpitaux, des gares, des places publiques ou des centres commerciaux.
