Une nouvelle forme de Jazz naquit alors, en Californie cette fois , privilégiant la pureté du son et la mélodie et laissant une large place aux musiciens blancs. Cette nouvelle génération s'est définie par un mot qu'on ne cesse depuis lors d'utiliser à toutes les sauces: Ce Jazz-là était COOL. Explorons l'univers de ses meilleurs représentants.

Kamasi Washington, le sax des Anges

Un triple album l’a placé au sommet en 2015 (“The Eric”), et il est revenu avec un double en 2018, le tout aussi réussi “Heaven and Earth” ! Kamasi Washington intrigue et charme par-delà la jazzosphère. Aux côtés de Kendrick Lamar et Snoop Dogg mais surtout à la tête du collectif West Coast Get Down, le charismatique saxophoniste de Los Angeles souffle un vent de folie sur la scène jazz contemporaine.

Livrée par un groupe comprenant notamment deux batteurs (Ronald Bruner Jr. et Tony Austin), deux bassistes (Miles Mosley et Thundercat), deux claviers (Brandon Coleman et Cameron Graves), une section cordes de 32 violonistes et un chœur d’une vingtaine de chanteurs, cette immense suite expérimentale lorgne aussi bien vers l’héritage de John Coltrane que celui de Pharoah Sanders, Albert Ayler, du Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra d’Horace Tapscott ou de Weather Report. On se laisse porter par ces vagues soufflées, ces thèmes brillamment composés (sublime Askim), ces relectures variées (le standard Cherokee comme Clair de lune de Debussy), ces arrangements qui tirent dans toutes les directions. Kamasi Washington n'a évidemment pas grandi qu'au son du jazz, et d'autres influences, qu'elles soient soul, funk, rock, classique ou rap, traversent aussi The Epic qui nécessite de nombreuses écoutes pour en apprécier toute la densité. La chose aura mobilisé son auteur et ses complices sur un mois plein. Trente jours durant lesquels tout le West Coast Get Down enregistre du matin au soir dans sa tanière ! La musique de Kamasi donc, mais aussi celle de chacun des membres du collectif. La légende veut que près de 200 compositions aient été enregistrées durant ces trente jours, dont un quart du saxophoniste.

Qu’un tel triple album soit diffusé par Brainfeeder aidera à le rendre encore plus ovni. Certains puristes auraient peut-être rêvé de le voir sous pavillon Impulse ! mais non. En signant avec le label de Flying Lotus, Kamasi Washington est finalement en phase avec son temps et sa personnalité. Avec le West Coast Get Down, il entame alors une tournée marathon aux quatre coins du monde. Les salles affichent complet et tous veulent entendre, et surtout voir, ce colosse souffleur, « le saxophoniste de Kendrick », « la nouvelle signature de Brainfeeder », celui qui fait du jazz « autrement »…

L’effet de surprise passé, le Californien ne se vautre pas pour autant sur ses lauriers. Lors d’une semaine de break au milieu de cette tournée sans fin, il réserve un studio et convainc sa clique pourtant sur les rotules d’enregistrer une suite à The Epic. Après le triple, place au double donc ! Heaven and Earth. Un nouveau tsunami de musiques plurielles. Toujours aussi mystique. Toujours aussi collective. Toujours aussi éclectique (on croise une reprise du Hubtones de Freddie Hubbard et, plus fou, du thème du film La Fureur de vaincre de Bruce Lee). Toujours aussi habitée, la musique de Kamasi Washington reste assez insaisissable. C’est même sa raison d’être. Il passe de Brainfeeder à Young Turks, label de The xx, FKA twigs et Sampha, pas vraiment connu pour ses signatures jazz. Reste à savoir si les fans « non jazz » de The Epic replongeront à nouveau corps et âme dans cet océan d’improvisations qui confirme le talent de son créateur et de ses complices…
