Icône de l'Amérique profonde vénérée par Dylan, Sinatra, Costello et quelques milliers d’autres, George Jones pouvait hypnotiser les chaumières en chantant un mode d’emploi de micro-onde. Retour sur un grand crooner country disparu en 2013.

Retour en grâce en 1978 avec plusieurs succès : une reprise du Maybellene de Chuck Berry avec Johnny Paycheck et Bartender's Blues en duo avec James Taylor. Ce dernier se retrouve sur My Very Special Guests, joli disque exclusivement composé d’autres duos avec notamment Waylon Jennings, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, Pop et Mavis Staples, Linda Ronstadt et Elvis Costello. Malgré les conseils appuyés de ses médecins, George Jones ne veut pas lâcher la bouteille et quitte même, au bout d'un mois, la cure de désintoxication qu'il avait entamée dans une clinique. L'année suivante pourtant, il signe l'un de ses chefs d'œuvre, un nouveau n°1, la ballade poignante He Stopped Loving Her Today, extraite de l'album I Am What I Am, plus grosse vente de sa carrière. Jusqu'en 1986, il continue à enchainer les tubes. Des succès qui n'influent pourtant guère sur sa conduite au quotidien, toujours aussi incontrôlable.



Grâce à sa quatrième femme, Nancy Sepulvado qu'il épouse en mars 1983, George Jones réussit à décrocher enfin de ses addictions. Mais à compter de 1987, sa musique lasse le public country qui se tourne vers les Randy Travis, Keith Whitley et autres Dwight Yoakam. Le Possum continuera à enregistrer malgré tout signant One Woman Man en 1988 (son dernier opus avec Billy Sherryll et le label Epic), And Along Came Jones en 1991, un énième recueil de duos avec Tammy Wynette quatre ans plus tard, It Don't Get Any Better Than This en 1998, etc. Un grave accident de voiture en mars 1999 révèle que Jones s'est remis à boire, mais d'autres disques – souvent très anecdotiques – suivront malgré tout jusqu’à la fin de sa vie. Celle-ci arrive à 81 ans. Le chanteur tire sa révérence le 26 avril 2013 à Nashville, au Vanderbilt University Medical Center, laissant derrière lui quelques chefs d’œuvre dans un genre dont il fut l'un des rois les plus insaisissables.
