L’âme blues, le cœur fissuré, le corps brisé, Billie Holiday reste encore aujourd’hui la complainte ultime drapée dans la soie ou dans la douleur. Un siècle après sa naissance, Lady Day reste la plus grande chanteuse de l'histoire du jazz.

Finalement, les étiquettes de feeling, envoûtant, émouvant, tout semble avoir été créé pour le chant de Billie Holiday, plus blues que jazz au bout du compte… Dans ces enregistrements pour le label Verve (le sublime Lady Sings the Blues en 1956, Songs for Distingué Lovers en 1957, et le controversé Lady in Satin en 1958 où sa voix sent déjà la mort), elle atteint le sommet de cette palette de sensations, entre émotion pure et souffrance intense. Lorsqu’elle se tait définitivement, le 17 juillet 1959, Billie Holiday peut enfin reposer en paix…
