Sunshine & The Rain

First emerging as a gritty garage pop duo in the vein of Phantogram and Cults, Sunshine & the Rain issued their Jon Spencer-produced debut, In the Darkness of My Night, in 2017 before shapeshifting into a more new wave, synth-based sound with their 2018 follow-up, Beneath the Stars. The project of New Jersey husband-and-wife team Justin and Ashley Morey, both formerly of the psych-rock outfit the Black Hollies, they made their debut as Sunshine & the Rain shortly after their previous band's dissolution in 2014. Their self-released 7" single "Can't Stop Thinking About You" b/w "Pale Blue Skies" netted them a deal with New York's Ernest Jenning Record Co. and they decamped to Sonic Youth's Echo Canyon West studio to work on a full-length LP. Produced by Jon Spencer, In the Darkness of My Night was released in May 2017. Returning to the studio at the end of the year, the Moreys headed down a new sonic path, stripping away most of the psych elements in favor of a more new wave, synth-aided sound on their follow-up, 2018's Beneath the Stars.
