Sadat X

Rapper Sadat X, born Derek Murphy on December 29, 1968 in New Rochelle, New York, first came to fame as the MC with the jazz-influenced hip-hop outfit Brand Nubian. He issued his first solo work, Wild Cowboys, in 1996. The album was more playful than Brand Nubian’s more studied, literate approach, and included “Hang ‘Em High”, a single built in part on a work by famed film composer Ennio Morricone. He quickly followed it with 1996’s No Bette Way, but he kept working with Brand Nubian as well and did not return to a solo career until the 2000 EP The State of New York vs. Derek Murphy. He began a career as a special education teacher, and that is part of the reason he would go five years before releasing his next album, 2005’s Experience and Education. 2006’s Black October, released at a time Sadat X was in serious legal trouble surrounding an arrest for weapons possession, had a somber feel both lyrically and musically. However, 2009’s Brand New Bein’ was considered a return to form, thanks in part to assistance from JS-1. He continued to release new work through the 2010s including 2015’s Never Left, 2016’s Agua, and 2017’s The Sum of a Man. He featured on a pair singles from Wu-Tang Clan’s DJ Symphony, 2019’s Anti Mumble Rap” and 2020’s “Real Hip-Hop”.
