Jean-Baptiste Fonlupt

A mainstay of the French piano scene, Jean-Baptiste Fonlupt tends to stress lesser-known music in his programming. He also has a strong commitment to contemporary music. Fonlupt was born in France in 1976. He began studying the piano at age six at the Conservatoire de Grenoble. He won the Royaume de Musique competition at 13 and appeared as soloist with the Orchestre Colonne at the Maison de la Radio in Paris. The following year, he took first prize at the Steinway Youth Piano Competition, which came with the chance to give a recital at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. Fonlupt matriculated at the Conservatoire de Paris (CNSM Paris) in 1991, studying with Bruno Rigutto and also taking lessons from Georges Pludermacher and, in Moscow, Eliso Virsaladze. He also traveled to Berlin for studies with Michael Endres. Fonlupt has appeared at major venues, including the Konzerthaus halls in Vienna and Berlin and the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, where he performed at the International Piano Festival. He also appeared in 2016 with the Mariinsky Orchestra under its conductor, Valery Gergiev. In concert and on recordings, Fonlupt has tended to stress lesser-known repertory and especially lesser-known works by major composers, such as the Apparitions of Liszt. His performances of the keyboard sonatas of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach have been acclaimed. Fonlupt released albums devoted to music by Chopin and Schumann (the latter including the rare Geistervariationen, the composer's final work) in the 2010s. He is often heard at French festivals and special series such as "Liszt en Provence," "Piano en Valois," and "Esprit du Piano in Bordeaux," and he performs frequently on French radio. Fonlupt tours regularly in Japan and China. Committed to contemporary music, he traveled to Caracas, Venezuela, to perform the world premiere of Anamorphoses for piano and orchestra, by composer Joseph-François Kremer, with the Simón Bolívar Orchestra. In 2022, he issued the album Stravinsky, Ravel, Prokofiev: Ballets on the La Dolce Volta label.
