Harriet Mackenzie

London-based violinist Harriet Mackenzie has become expert in an unusual variety of repertory, playing contemporary music, chamber music, and world violin styles in addition to traditional concerto and recital works. Her recordings in the 2010s have generated a high level of critical acclaim. Mackenzie told the website Retorica that from the age of three "I was harassing my parents because I was just desperate to play the violin. My sister Kate was playing and I used to hear her practising and there was just something about the timbre of the violin that I found just totally intriguing. I adored it." They gave in when Harriet was five, and she studied with teacher Sheila Nelson until she was 18, bypassing the world of youth orchestras and enrolling at that time at the Royal Academy of Music in London. She went on for a master's degree after graduating and earned M.Mus. and DipRAM degrees with First Class honors, also earning the title of Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) for her contributions to the school. She went on for further study under a fellowship at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music. Mackenzie has been heard on BBC Radio 3, Classic FM, and Hungarian National Radio, and she has been heard in recitals and concerto performances at Wigmore Hall in London, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Budapest Marble Hall, Bridgewater Hall in Manchester, the Seoul International Concert Hall, the Shanghai Oriental Arts Center, and the Kyiv Hall of Marble Columns. A strong supporter of contemporary music who proclaims herself aware that she is creating a legacy when she programs it, Mackenzie has premiered the Violin Concerto of Robert Fokkens at London's Southbank Centre, Graham Coatman's Bakolo Drom (at the Swaledale Festival), the concerto "Wall of Water" and the violin and harp concerto of Deborah Pritchard, and, with her chamber group Kosmos, the Triple Concerto of Errollyn Wallen (at the Jersey Liberation Festival). She is also the co-founder of the chamber group Karolos. Mackenzie joined violinist Philippa Mo for a recording of English violin duos on the NMC label in 2012. She later moved to Nimbus Alliance and recorded an album of 21st century violin concertos and, in 2018, a recital of works by Grieg, Tchaikovsky, and Prokofiev with pianist Christina Lawrie.
