Fana Hues

California's Fana Hues makes sparse, beat-driven pop that moves deftly between sultry R&B, rock, psychedelia, and hip-hop. A singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist with an eclectic musical past, she came up playing in her family's band and even toured as part of a musical theater group before launching a solo career with 2021's Hues. Following collaborations with Tyler, The Creator and THEY., Hues delivered her sophomore album, 2022's Flora + Fana. Born and raised in a large musical family from Pasadena, Fana Hughes endured a crippling combination of scarlet fever, tonsillitis, and strep throat as a child that left her unable to sing for five years. Through years of practice and the support of her close-knit family, she found her voice in a big way, going on to sing and play in her family's band, to star in a high school production of The Wiz, and eventually to tour the country in a musical theater production devoted to the music of Elvis Presley. Also a multi-instrumentalist with a particular gift for the bass, Hughes began writing and recording songs in her early twenties, inspired by heroes like Anita Baker, Nina Simone, Tracy Chapman, and Mary J. Blige. Adopting the stage name Fana Hues, she signed with the Bright Antenna label and debuted in 2020 with the atmospheric single "Notice Me." Additional tracks like the retro-psych-soul single "Icarus" earned Hues critical acclaim and shout-outs from stars like Earl Sweatshirt and Tyler, The Creator. At the end of 2021, she released her debut project, a ten-song collection simply called Hues. "Comfortable," a collaboration with Los Angeles' THEY., arrived in 2022. Also that year, she returned with her atmospherically dreamy sophomore full-length, Flora + Fana, which featured the single "Breakfast."
