Christoph Koncz
Christoph Koncz has made major impacts as both violinist and conductor. His stardom began early, at age nine, when he starred in the internationally successful film The Red Violin.
Koncz was born in Konstanz, West Germany, on April 3, 1987. He was descended from a long line of Austrian and Hungarian musicians, and when he was given violin lessons at age four, he quickly took to the instrument. Just two years later, he enrolled at the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna, Austria, studying with Eugenia Polatschek. By nine, he was able to convincingly portray child prodigy Kaspar Weiss in the film The Red Violin. He continued his studies in Vienna and also at universities in Salzburg and Graz, Austria, working with Josef Hell, Igor Ozim, and Boris Kuschnir. Koncz also studied conducting in Vienna with Mark Stringer and took master classes with violinist Daniel Harding and conductor Daniel Barenboim.
At the beginning of his career, Koncz was active mostly as a violinist, making his solo debut at 12 with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra under conductor Charles Dutoit. He has performed with other world-class conductors, including Neville Marriner, Dmitry Sitkovetsky, and Marc Minkowski. An enthusiastic chamber music player, Koncz has appeared with such famed musicians as violinist Joshua Bell, violist Kim Kashkashian, and fortepianist Rudolf Buchbinder. At age 20, he was appointed principal second violinist of the Vienna Philharmonic, a position he still holds. Koncz made his conducting debut in 2013 at the Salzburg Mozartwoche Festival and has gone on to conduct such major ensembles as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Memphis Symphony, and the Orchestre Métropolitain de Montréal, with which he toured. In the late 2010s, he became the chief conductor of the Kammerakademie Neuss am Rhein in Germany.
Koncz appeared in 2017 on a recording of Brahms' string sextets on the Erato label. Signed to Sony Classical, he released his debut on that label, Mozart's Violin, in 2020; the album offered a complete cycle of Mozart's violin concertos, played by Koncz on a violin Mozart himself once owned.
