Charles Wesley Godwin

Singer and songwriter Charles Wesley Godwin has made his West Virginia heritage a vital part of his music, spinning tales of the big events in ordinary lives that are keenly observed and easily relatable. Godwin's music is traditional country with an evocative sound informed by folk music, and his strong but flexible baritone voice has a quaver that gives his performances a ring of truth. After paying his dues playing club dates and honing his craft as a tunesmith, Godwin made a well-received debut with 2019's Seneca, a set of Appalachian memories penned while he was living in the Midwest, and he delivered a broader range of stories with similar confidence on 2021's How the Mighty Fall and 2023's Family Ties. Charles Wesley Godwin was born and raised in West Virginia, where his father earned his living as a coal miner and his mother was a teacher. Growing up, his greatest interests were hunting, fishing, and sports, especially football, but he was always drawn to music. Godwin enrolled at West Virginia University hoping to play football, but after he was cut from the team, he was looking for something to occupy his time. In 2012, he got a guitar and learned to play. Within a few months, he was confident enough with the instrument to start writing songs, soaking up inspiration from Ryan Bingham, Chris Knight, Willie Nelson, and John Prine. In 2013, he spent a semester studying abroad in Estonia, and discovered his new friends enjoyed hearing him sing and play his tunes; one even arranged for him to make his public performing debut at a fashion show. He graduated from WVU in 2014, and the following year, he decided to follow his dream and pursue a full-time career in music. He helped found an Americana band called Union Sound Treaty, who enjoyed local success in West Virginia, but the schedules of his bandmates interfered with the group's potential and they broke up. Godwin decided to strike out on his own, and when his wife landed a job in Ohio, he followed her to the Midwest. Being away from the place he called home inspired him to write about his West Virginia heritage, and his songs about Appalachian life formed the basis of his first solo album, 2019's Seneca. The LP earned enthusiastic reviews and the song "Hardwood Floors" became a success on streaming services. Godwin set out on tour to promote Seneca, and he found himself sharing stages with artists like Luke Combs, Tyler Childers, Colter Wall, and Shooter Jennings. His road work stopped in early 2020 -- the COVID-19 pandemic closed music venues across the country, which kept Godwin at home for the rest of the year. Around the same time, Godwin and his wife welcomed their first child, and the new responsibilities of parenthood gave him plenty to think about while writing his next batch of songs. Lockdown helped boost Godwin's creativity, and when he and producer/engineer Al Torrence (who was at the controls for Seneca) were ready to start work on his second album, he had especially strong material to choose from. The follow-up LP, How the Mighty Fall, was released in November 2021. He collaborated with Zach Bryan on the track "Jamie," which appeared on Bryan's 2022 EP, Summertime Blues, and in early 2023 he released a string of singles including "All Again" and "Family Ties," ahead of the arrival of his third long-player, also called Family Ties, later that year.
