Cameo
Larry Blackmon fonde Cameo, treize musiciens avides de groove, qui évoluent sur la trace de Parliament et d'Earth, Wind And Fire. Durant six ans, le groupe (avec Tomi Jenkins et Nathan Leftenant, le noyau dur) aligne tournées et albums (Ugly Ego en 1978, Cameosis en 1980, Knights Of The Sound Table en 1981). Réduisant le groupe à un trio de base (plus des invités), dès 1984, Blackmon crée un nouveau funk synthétique, au son énorme, s'éloignant du style cuivré et ciselé des débuts. Caractérisé par le cache-sexe rouge - dessiné par J.-P. Gaultier - qu'il arbore sur scène, Larry Blackmon ne lâche pas le funk, comme en témoigne l'album In The Face Of Funk, autoproduit en 1994. À la fin de sa vie, Miles Davis proclamait son admiration pour cette formation, allant même jusqu'à enregistrer un titre avec eux.Le trio n'en démord pas, et poursuit sa carrière avec, en 1996, l'album Nasty, puis en 2000, l'album Sexy Sweet Thing. Cameo reste une des formations de funk les plus moderne, ce qui explique son succès constant au fil des époques.
