Attic Lights

With their '70s power pop and folk-rock-influenced sound, Scotland's Attic Lights came to wider recognition in the mid-2000s making hooky, guitar-based anthems. Following the release of their debut eponymous album on Island Records, they moved to Spain's Elefant Records for 2008's Friday Night Lights. Formed in Glasgow in 2005, Attic Lights initially featured singer/guitarist Kev Sherry and singer/bassist Colin McArdle. They met while students at the University of Glasgow and started writing songs together in McArdle's attic -- hence the band name -- and were eventually joined by guitarist/keyboardist Jamie Houston, guitarist Tim Davidson, and drummer Noel O'Donnell. By the end of 2006, they had issued two well-received EPs, The Attic Lights and Shiver the Trees. The albums, combined with a steady slate of live shows, helped build considerable interest in the band, who were quickly drawing favorable comparisons to bands like Teenage Fanclub, Fountains of Wayne, and Weezer. Buoyed by the attention, the band scored a high-profile spot playing the T-Break stage at the 2007 T in the Park Festival. A bidding war followed that landed the band at Island Records, where they issued their debut album, 2008's Friday Night Lights, featuring production assistance by Francis MacDonald (Teenage Fanclub, BMX Bandits, Camera Obscura), and arrangements by Björn Yttling (Peter Bjorn & John). Tours followed, and in 2010 Houston left the band and was replaced by producer/guitarist/keyboardist Jim Lang. Also during this period, the band parted ways with Island and signed with the Spanish Elefant Records. In 2013, Attic Lights returned with their sophomore album, Super De Luxe, which again featured contributions by MacDonald. Over the next few years, they continued to work on material, with Sherry taking some time away to work on other projects, including publishing his comic book Warpaint in 2018. He also began work on a novel and debut solo album. In 2019, Attic Lights issued their third full-length album, Love in the Time of Shark Attacks.
