Angie McMahon
Known for her candid and relatable lyrics, Australian singer/songwriter Angie McMahon's guitar-driven sound combines elements of folk and indie rock. She first came to prominence with the release of her debut 2017 single, the radio and fan favorite "Slow Mover." Two years of industry buzz and a scattering of additional singles later, she delivered her first album, Salt, and landed in Australia's Top Five. Her more atmospheric second album, 2023's Light, Dark, Light Again, went to number six.
Growing up in Melbourne, McMahon started performing as a teenager, playing a mix of timid, contemporary folk before her first major break came in 2013, when she won a competition to support Bon Jovi on the Australian leg of their Because We Can tour. Although relishing the experience, she retreated from the industry to continue writing, playing, and perfecting her craft before deciding to join the nine-piece soul outfit the Fabric. After playing live shows and recording an EP with the group, McMahon decided to pursue her solo career, and after plying her now more indie rock-focused sound at gigs, she finally issued her debut single "Slow Mover" in 2017. Instantly picked up by national radio, the song quickly propelled her into the spotlight. Support slots for the likes of the Shins, Father John Misty, and Angus & Julia Stone followed, as did sold-out headline shows in Australia and the U.K. At the beginning of 2019, McMahon issued the single "Pasta," and was also nominated for Song of the Year and Rock Work of the Year at the 2019 APRA Awards. In July of that year, she delivered her full-length debut, Salt, on the Dualtone label. It went all the way to number five on Australia's album chart. The acoustic Piano Salt EP reworked some of its songs in late 2020 and landed in the Top 20.
McMahon released the more reflective follow-up, Light, Dark, Light Again, on Gracie Music/AWAL in October 2023. Recorded in Australia with Salt's Alex O'Gorman and in the U.S. with Brad Cook (Bon Iver, Snail Mail), it incorporated nature recordings, piano, and more synths while remaining rooted in guitar-driven indie rock. The album nearly duplicated her debut's chart success, peaking at number six in Australia.
