Angelica Garcia

Los Angeles-bred singer/songwriter Angelica Garcia makes vibrantly eclectic indie rock informed by her Mexican and Salvadoran roots and touching upon blues, Americana, pop, and electronic traditions. She first garnered praise for her 2016 debut album, Medicine for Birds, and further developed her sound with 2020's Cha Cha Palace and 2024's Gemelo, the latter of which featured production by Chicano Batman's Carlos Arévalo. Hailing from the San Gabriel Valley, just east of Los Angeles, Garcia grew up in a creative, multigenerational household of Mexican and Salvadoran heritage. From a young age, she was exposed to a vibrant mix of sounds, including banda, ranchera, and other traditional Mexican styles of music. She was also encouraged to play music by her mother, aunt, and uncle, who worked as professional mariachi and Latin pop performers. As a teenager, Garcia developed her skills attending LACHSA (Los Angeles County High School for the Arts), where she took classes in jazz and classical music. She also began to expand her ear, listening to indie rock acts like the White Stripes, School of Seven Bells, Bat for Lashes, M.I.A., and others. Her stepfather, a longtime manager and A&R rep for bands like Los Lobos and Dwight Yoakam, also supported her interests, introducing her to country artists like Willie Nelson and Neil Young. After high school, Garcia moved with her family to Accomac, Virginia. She eventually relocated to Richmond, where she found herself at home in the city's diverse arts scene. In 2016, she released her debut album, Medicine for Birds, recorded in Nashville with Charlie Peacock. Following extensive touring, she signed with the Richmond-based Spacebomb Records and in 2020 released Cha Cha Palace. Recorded with Mikrowaves leader Eddie Prendergast, the album found Garcia digging deeper into her cultural and familial roots, blending Mexican musical traditions with hooky psych and indie rock sounds. Included on the album were the songs "Karma the Knife," "Jicama," and "It Don't Hinder Me." In the wake of the record's release, Garcia eventually relocated back to Los Angeles. She also signed with Partisan Records and returned in June 2024 with her third full-length, Gemelo. Produced by Chicano Batman guitarist Carlos Arévalo, the album (which translates as "twin") was Garcia's first to be sung almost entirely in Spanish.
