Le sauveur s’appelle Daniel Lanois, illustre producteur (et aussi auteur compositeur interprète, on a tendance à l’oublier) aux nombreuses réussites (U2, Peter Gabriel, Bob Dylan, Robbie Robertson ou les Neville Brothers).
Outre les chansons de son producteur composées pour l’occasion, Emmylou Harris fait un choix judicieux en proposant une relecture iconoclaste du « May This Be Love » de Jimi Hendrix, « Every Grain of Sand » de Bob Dylan (transformé ici en valse, et en effet la seule chanson à sauver du désastre de son Shot of Love de 1981), « Sweet Old World » de Lucinda Williams qu'elle rend plus tendre, la première a avoir été enregistrée pour l'album « All My Tears », de la méconnue Julie Miller (l’épouse de son guitariste Buddy Miller, qui la ré-enregistrera en 1999 pour son Broken Things), tandis que ses amis Gillian Welch, Steve Earle et Rodney Crowell, trois des meilleurs représentants de la country alternative, lui offrent leurs compositions. « Wrecking Ball » est une reprise de Neil Young (qui y chante d’ailleurs en harmonie), pêchée dans son album Freedom.
Loin des canons de la country ou du country rock, Lanois a prévu un écrin sonore idéal pour Emmylou, qui lui va à ravir, en créant une atmosphère éthérée à la fois fraîche et sombre, délibérément acoustique et complexe bien qu'enregistré live dans le studio.
La voix plaintive est toute en nuances, captivante et différente d’une chanson à l’autre, et l’instrumentation variée de premier ordre. Un album qui se bonifie à chaque écoute, intemporel et magique, qui n’a pas reçu l’accueil du public escompté, alors que les critiques furent unanimes. Un vrai gâchis.
