Des quatre groupes composant le légendaire "Big Four" (aux côtés de Metallica, Anthrax et Megadeth), Slayer a été le plus constant et le moins enclin aux compromis. De fait, ce World Painted Blood de 2009 fait plus qu'évoquer le titre du chef-d'œuvre de 1986, Reign in Blood, il en partage l'agressivité et ce thrash metal teinté de hardcore. Tout au long du disque, le son est puissant et menaçant, avec la voix du bassiste/chanteur Tom Araya placée au premier plan du mix, accordant à l'ensemble un effet pércutant, et des titres comme "Hate Worldwide" ou "Psychopathy Red" sont de vrais rouleaux compresseurs. Restant fidèle à l'éthique old-school du groupe, World Painted Blood continue de porter la torche de l'idiome thrash le plus pur.
