Moins adulé en France qu’aux Etats-Unis, où il est encore considéré par beaucoup comme le dernier groupe mythique américain, le Grateful Dead incarnait dans les années 60 le son proto-hippie de San Francisco. Notamment en jouant aux côtés de Big Brother & The Holding Cie durant les acid tests des Merry Prankers (“joyeux lurons”), ces raves où le LSD – encore légal en Californie – se buvait comme du petit-lait dans d'énormes chaudrons. Après un premier opus éponyme purement psychédélique, le trip expérimental Anthem of the Sun, et le planant mais coûteux Aoxomoxoa, le groupe opère un virage country-folk inédit. Il faut dire qu’en cette année 1970, le mouvement hippie vit son crépuscule. Après avoir écouté le Déjà Vu de Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, le guitariste emblématique Jerry Garcia change de registre et limite les éléments hypnotiques pour revenir à un bluegrass en usant de la pedal steel guitar. En seulement neuf jours, finances obligent, les inconditionnels des jams interminables enregistrent Workingman’s Dead au Pacific High Recording Studio de San Francisco. Savant mélange de rythmes effrénés avec New Speedway Boogie et de morceaux passés cultes plus courts et country comme Uncle John’s Band, l’opus déroute certains, en ravit d’autres.
