This double-disc set opens with a father talking to his son about staying "true to the game." The gangsta game, that is, and the Game of Life, lived by the Code of the Streets. What follows is track after track of extreme gangsta rap, replete with continual obscenities, references to drugs, violence, and everything else that stays "true" to that well-know formula (In other words, Tru is not for the kiddies).
All that predictability is offset, thankfully, by some original rap stylings. Tru's core members are C-Murder "Da Killa," Master P "Ice Cream Man," and The Shocker. All favor the "rapid-attack" style so popular with southern rappers, and all can pop off syllables like gang bangers "popping off caps." "I Always Feel Like" is about the sneaky power of paranoia, while "I Got Candy" is about--you guessed it--slinging dope. Filling out the sound are guest artists aplenty, including Mia X, C-Loc, and Kane.
