Pour célébrer le centenaire de Charlie Parker, né le 29 août 1920 à Kansas City, cette impeccable compilation réunit les sessions enregistrées par le saxophoniste pour le label Savoy entre 1944 et 1948. 28 pistes restaurées et remastérisées par Paul Blakemore qui permettent de retrouver des géants comme Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, Bud Powell ou John Lewis, mais surtout de goûter à la naissance du bebop. Certains titres proviennent d’une mythique séance de novembre 1945 que certains baptisèrent « The Greatest Jazz Session Ever » avec Miles, Max Roach et Curley Russell présentés comme les Charlie Parker’s Reboppers. La virtuosité de Bird et de ses complices comme leur poésie acrobatique révolutionnent le jazz qui n’avait jusqu’ici jamais atteint de tels sommets de liberté et de technicité. Sans parler de la beauté des thèmes (Donna Lee, Chasin' the Bird, Milestones, Now's the Time, Parker's Mood, Marmaduke…), tous devenus d’intouchables standards.
